#3 Give them a box of Alfort chocolates
Just like your verbs, you want to be specific with your nouns. Do not shy away from brand names, do not shy away from makes and models. Your reader lives in a world where they don’t get into their cars, they get into their Mazdas, Teslas, Ford Foresters, Toyota Rav 4s.
In American Psycho Patrick Bateman both in the books and the movie tells a hooker not to touch his watch. In the movie he says “Don’t touch the watch”, while in the book he says “Don’t touch the Rolex”. The status and power of Bateman (for the scene) are established far more clearly in the latter than the former.
Don’t waste my time telling me he chewed red gum; tell me it was Big Red- I know what that is.
You can remember this by saying to yourself: What brand of candy is it honey?
