Power is a topic many obsess over in business, politics, and work life. But from what I have seen in my explorations of reading and writing there are far too many of us writers who are reluctant to wield their power when constructing sentences.
Now I’ve talked a bit before about the power of imagery when it comes to descriptions- but how do you structure a powerful sentence? It comes down to 5 basic rules:
- Avoid the passive voice as much as possible.
- Adverbs are your enemy- kill them where they stand.
- Avoid qualifiers
- Avoid needless fillers
- Use metaphors not similes
