The most important thing a writer must do is “Read a lot and write a lot” (Stephen King, On Writing). I don’t care how you think of yourself- if you fancy yourself as the next best thing or the least memorable creature on the planet- the fact of the matter is, if you aren’t writing and reading you aren’t being a writer.
Writing, for me, has been a way to connect with humanity. It is in my nature to absorb and share stories, to want to make something. But that desire and that nature mean absolutely nothing if I’m not doing anything about it.
The idea of going any day without working on both of my books and posts for this website disturbs me, because if I am not writing, then I am going against my own nature. Sure it may be a nature that I have set for myself- but to exist unnaturally is in a way a disgusting perversion of life.
It is important to promote your work, to discuss it with friends, and to be out there experiencing life. But as a writer there are only two things that you should be doing and caring about above everything else in your life and career: Your family and your writing.
Do not come to me with excuses about how busy your week was- come to me with a plan on how to make next week better starting in five minutes. Do not assume that anything that happens to you is so external that it isn’t in some way your responsibility to make up for it. None of us have real limitations set by others- we only set them for ourselves with how we approach our world and circumstances.
So tell me, what are you doing? Cause if you aren’t reading or writing as much as possible my friends- you aren’t being much of a writer. You’re being something else entirely.
Keep learning, keep reading, and most important of all: keep writing my friends.
