I will admit that I am no poet. I freely give that title to the more deserving of lyrical masters. I think of poetry as written thought, the mind placing the first ideas down, knowing exactly what it means when doing so- yet hiding just enough of those details. I believe that slight bit of withholding yields the emotion that poets are famous in implanting onto others. We don’t only see or hear the words of poetry but we are able to feel them so long as a poet does their job.

There is a love for language that breeds the poet. Somewhere along the lines of the living these people have stood out and spoken up in streams of inner thoughts. For better or worse, they have fought the oppression of centuries- yet we who mock them fail to remember that every song is a poem. Every musician you love writes poetry, or takes the words of a poem and calls them lyrics. Poetry has thus become one of the greatest and least appreciated of the arts of human experience. Each poem a string of feeling and often honest truths. Today I want you to read the poems of a man who thinks.

43339423_253373651989624_2644501073129111552_nHis name is Samuel. He lives far from my native New York in Kenya. With a cross-cultural interaction entirely through profile pictures and textual communication, I bet you can imagine that it would be hard to relate to Samuel, as it is difficult to relate to anyone when they live so far. Yet when I read his poems, he comes to life in my head. Here is a man who struggles in a world literally identical to mine yet so far away, who deals with politics and social changes in the same ways I do. Through his poems he has shown me his life- one with a passion for success, social change, and self-growth.

To me, that is what good writing is. It does not matter where you’re from or your educational background. What matters is that you can make your words come alive, you can make your world real to the people around you who only see their own lives and their own world. I have often said to my family a disturbing thought- that to me good writing is writing that can cause the reader to feel. I am frequently blown away by the capacity of the written word to convince a person to cry, to smile- to feel that warm feeling of joy for our world.

Over time, Samuel will grow and develop his passions; I sincerely hope he does. But for now, I ask that you read his poetry, place your feet firm and listen carefully to the words as you read them. There is something to be said for each poem, and I encourage you to find in yourself what should be said for these. Everyone who has ever lived, can show you a part of the world you have never seen. Let Samuel do what he does, and see where it takes you.

Mind you that these poems are meant to be spoken aloud, please feel free to do so- however some lines are bilingual so have fun trying to say them if you can!

THIS IS IT

Am no longer that kid, that bro,
No longer that pro, whom you expect to blow,
No longer that man in the mirror,
I rife with symbolism,
I’ll no longer poetite with my studies,
But unless of course i’ll make my studies
I’ll make them to be a poem,
‘Cause am a poet,
Am remaining to do just a few more poems,
From my boxset,
Which I wrote ages ago,
And they wanna kill me,
All they do is to try and destroy my art,
But I believe good art never dies,
I love unbreakable,
I love unstoppable,
You see they thought all my mind is always on poems,
And it usually is,
But they never thought that one day,one day,
This perfomer myself,
Will one day outthink them,
Have generated several billion articles for their magazine,
And they are now angry at me and they wanna kill me,
I’m leaving their print media club a free agent,
Owning half of their print media club,
I really dont like talking a lot,
I really dont,
I prefer reading for KCSE this year than talking,
And of course pen on paper writing poems,
Its the A deal,
Its the KCSE deal,
Please help me,
I love ya,
I love you all,
And I promise you the best is yet to come,
‘Cause am done with poetry,
This Is It.

ENLIGHTENING OUR GENERATION.

Our generation generates gambling,
Our generation kills everything,
Do you see that kid in the street?
Who walks like she owns some seat?
You meet him in every corner, every corner,
Gambling with his life,
Oh! his life,
But he thinks he only gambles with money,
Oh!
Life!
I-
I remember,
Oh! I remember,
When I was a drug member,
Only listened to harmful music,
Now its popular music,
Like nyashinskis, Vumilia ni mimi, please dont leave me,
Dont let the money fool you, sponsors just wanna use you,
Nakuomba mtoto wa mama usiharibike,na hizo biashara tu.
Permissiveness Is The Key To Promiscuity,
I am not your saviour to bring you from your iniquity,
I am only giving you unsolicited advice,
To make your life like a Sunrise,
And not like When The Sun Goes Down,
That High school Short Story in which you’ll moan and groan,
Cause permissiveness is the key to promiscuity.
Kindly force yourself to love God if you dont love God, love God,
Cause thats the only Universal
Love which forces the matter to matter,
My enlightenment will be enough if you follow God, follow God,
If its hard assume like Hes an INSTAGRAM CELEBRITY, celebrity,
In Facebook let him be the face of your book, your book,
He will write the chapters of your book, your book, manipulate the timeline of your life, notify your enemies and message your Inbox,
To enlighten you and your Generation.

I appreciate you taking the time to look at Samuel’s work. You can find him on Facebook here and on Instagram here. He is developing a YouTube channel and a website, still in their early stages. Bear with him as he develops his voice and his work. I feel he has something to say that is worth your time.

Samuel, I hope that life has great things in store for you and that you can experience much of our world and share those experiences with us all. You have potential, and I would like to see where it takes you. Best of luck.
